Oregon Convention Center on course to be the most sustainable convention center in the world

With hundreds of events and more than a half a million guests each year, the Oregon Convention Center’s sustainability is blazing the trail towards the most sustainable convention center in the world. Guests of the recent Rose City Comic Con might even say it’s the most sustainable in the galaxy.

Oregon Convention Center recognized for clean water strategy

Healthy watersheds advocate Salmon-Safe has recognized the Oregon Convention Center with Salmon-Safe recertification for its commitment to reducing polluted runoff to the Willamette River.

A Portland-based nonprofit, Salmon-Safe works with public and private landowners to promote reduced water use, onsite stormwater treatment, and protection of water quality. Properties like the Oregon Convention Center are certified as Salmon-Safe for extensive efforts to halt runoff from entering streams and impacting imperiled salmon.

"For years, the lot at the corner of Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Northeast Holladay Street sat vacant but full of promise — promise that someday, a huge hotel would rise from the gravel to accommodate tens of thousands of visitors to the adjacent Oregon Convention Center every year.

"Though three decades passed before all the stars aligned on the project, they did at last in 2017, when the Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center finally broke ground.

Oregon Convention Center event manager Tim Libra earns CMP credential

The Oregon Convention Center (OCC) is proud to announce that event manager Tim Libra has earned his Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) credential, becoming the tenth OCC staff member to obtain the esteemed industry designation.

Launched by the Events Industry Council (EIC) in 1985 to enhance the knowledge and performance of meeting professionals and advance uniform standards of practice, achieving the CMP certification requires years of professional experience, education and mastery of a rigorous exam.

Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center creates tipping point for 26 conventions to choose Portland

The organizers of 26 conventions have chosen Portland after construction began on the Hyatt Regency Portland hotel, validating projections from hotel boosters about the project’s impact on the local economy.

Before construction, hotel backers said as many as 10 new mid-sized conventions each year would choose Portland because of the addition of a 600-room hotel across the street from the convention center. The hotel is slated to open in early 2020.

Benson Polytechnic High School gets a virtual, and up-close, look at future Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center

Teenagers across the country see plenty of virtual reality. From video games to iPhone Snapchat filters, it’s easy to find ways the virtual world interacts with the real world.

For 18 lucky Benson Polytechnic High School students, the world of virtual reality had some serious real-world implications last month, as they saw how 3D modeling, computer-aided design and other technologies have helped the builders of the Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center.
