The Oregon Convention Center’s glass spires have been a famous feature of Portland’s skyline for 27 years, particularly when they light up at night. But keep an eye on them. Thanks to a recent lighting system upgrade, you will occasionally see the familiar green-white towers glow in a range of colors.

Oregon Convention Center's tower lights will be going dark temporarily in order to replace them with a new energy-efficient, programmable LED lighting system

On Tuesday, April 25th, the Oregon Convention Center (OCC) will begin replacing the existing fixtures that light its iconic towers with a significantly more energy-efficient lighting system. Soon new programmable, colored LED lights will add drama to the city’s nighttime skyline, enhance the convention center’s visitor experience, and amplify its forward-thinking brand.

Oregon Convention Center replaces lighting fixtures with energy efficient LED technology

The Oregon Convention Center recently replaced all lighting fixtures in the building's Oregon Ballroom, Portland Ballroom and its entire loading dock area. Incandescent and fluorescent fixtures were all changed to a modern, energy efficient LED lighting technology.

The annual energy savings is estimated to be 1,144,076 kWh, with an annual cost savings of approximately $76,000, meaning the replacement project will pay for itself in less than three years.

Oregon Convention Center's new LED lights will add drama to Portland's nighttime skyline, and save energy

Soon Portland residents and visitors will start seeing the Oregon Convention Center's iconic towers glowing in a variety of colors, depending on the events inside. But it isn't all for show. The new programmable LED tower lighting system will also provide greater energy efficiency.

"We have already replaced 70 to 75 percent of our interior lighting with more energy-efficient fixtures," said Scott Cruickshank, OCC executive director. "But we haven't touched the towers until now."
