Unmistakably Oregon: Finding a sense of place at the new Oregon Convention Center

Written by Natalia Hurt, Oregon Business

Organic and inclusive, the remodeled Convention Center makes visitors feel at ease and at home.

Convention centers, like airports, can possess a disorienting quality that leaves guests forgetting which city they are in as they walk the nondescript halls. But of all the words that describe Portland’s newly renovated Oregon Convention Center  —  welcoming, organic, intuitive  —  Oregonian tops the list.

by Amber Wilmarth, KPTV - FOX 12

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) - Community leaders are celebrating the new and improved Oregon Convention Center.

The $40 million renovation took about 14 months to complete, but it took years of planning. From the carpets, to the ceiling design, to who they hired - every step served a specific purpose.

On Monday, the convention center hosted a celebration to unveil the renovated space.

Newly Renovated Oregon Convention Center Unveiled

by Rebecca Ellis, OPB

The Oregon Convention Center has emerged from a 14-month renovation looking, contractors hope, a little more like Oregon.

The carpets, black and grey with green splotches, are meant to resemble lichen. Staff say the new ballroom ceiling takes its inspiration from the forest. And the wooden slats on the ceiling create a topographical map of the Cascade mountain range.
