Willamette Week
By Rachel Monahan |  Sophie Peel

For more than a year, Oregonians have been waiting for the end of the pandemic. For 226,999 of them, the end began here.

The Oregon Convention Center—a cavernous, 160,000-square-foot hall plopped in the no man’s land between Moda Center and the industrial eastside—hosts the state’s largest vaccine clinic.

Metro working to open the doors of the Oregon Convention Center as evacuee shelter

Clackamas County, Metro and the Oregon Convention Center are working to set up the center as an evacuee shelter for community members displaced by the Oregon wildfires.

The Red Cross managed shelter will accommodate community members displaced by the fires with sleeping arrangements and other services offered in the temporary space, with COVID-19 physically distanced protocols. The Joint Office of Homeless Services will also be expanding the capacity of the shelter set up earlier this year.

OCC's spires will be shining in yellow as a beacon of hope for our suffering and silenced communities of color

Oregonians are demanding change to dismantle racist systems and address racial inequities in our region and throughout our country. For far too long, communities of color have been unheard. In the words of Martin Luther King Jr. “A riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it that America has failed to hear? …it has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. …And so in a real sense our nation’s summer of riots are caused by our nation’s winters of delay.”
