Oregon Convention Center project proceeding

By Sam Tenney, DJC Oregon

A major project to upgrade the Oregon Convention Center is under way and on pace for completion at the end of this year to coincide with the opening of the 600-room Hyatt Regency hotel one block to the north.

The $39 million renovation will modernize public areas of the 30-year-old structure, providing an enhanced guest experience while establishing better connections to entries and improving wayfinding for hotel guests and transit users disembarking from the adjacent MAX platform.

Hotel construction approaching homestretch

By Josh Kulla, Daily Journal of Commerce

The construction site has become a seeming fixture, but crews are clearly making progress on the massive Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center.

The hotel will be 14 stories and hold 440,000 square feet. Inside, there will be 600 rooms, a pair of ballrooms and meeting space. Metro is spearheading the project to serve its convention center across Northeast Holladay Street.

Decades in the making, the Convention Center hotel finally takes shape (Photos)

"For years, the lot at the corner of Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Northeast Holladay Street sat vacant but full of promise — promise that someday, a huge hotel would rise from the gravel to accommodate tens of thousands of visitors to the adjacent Oregon Convention Center every year.

"Though three decades passed before all the stars aligned on the project, they did at last in 2017, when the Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center finally broke ground.

Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center creates tipping point for 26 conventions to choose Portland

From Metro News

The organizers of 26 conventions have chosen Portland after construction began on the Hyatt Regency Portland hotel, validating projections from hotel boosters about the project’s impact on the local economy.

Before construction, hotel backers said as many as 10 new mid-sized conventions each year would choose Portland because of the addition of a 600-room hotel across the street from the convention center. The hotel is slated to open in early 2020.

Photos: Crews make headway on convention center hotel

"Foundation work is complete on the Hyatt Regency Portland at the Oregon Convention Center, a 600-room hotel in the Lloyd District. Officials expect the structure to generate additional conventions and draw more tourists to the area. Mortenson is the developer and design-builder of the $240 million project, which was designed by ESG Architects of Minneapolis. The 14-story building will have a bar, a restaurant and a ground-floor retail market, as well as 32,000 square feet of ballroom and meeting space."
